Pregnancy

Alcohol is a toxic substance. If you're pregnant, you will pass alcohol through your bloodstream to the unborn baby, where it can cause damage.

The unborn baby still needs to grow and develop. This is a vulnerable process. Women who are pregnant or want to become pregnant are advised to stop drinking alcohol.

Recent scientific research has shown that even a limited amount of alcohol is more harmful to the unborn child than previously was believed. Even a small amount of alcohol can cause damage. Quitting drinking will give your child the best start of all.

If you're already pregnant and you do drink, and if you're feeling unsure, talk with your GP or gynaecologist. They can do tests to see if your baby is all right.
